I sort of feel awful for just leaving this blog sitting for months with no updates. I know you're wondering what's become of our crazy planning ie: josh's obnoxious lil jon and the eastside boys idea. It's crazy how fast 2 little months can fly by. So much has happened over the past 60 or so days and it's awful that I haven't shared -- because I know a million people look forward to reading this ; )
So I must start by saying we have an official date! AHHHH... crazy right?!? Last you heard- I had the church and was looking for a reception site... there was a place downtown that I just loved and thought it would price me right out of loving it... but it didn't. It all started like this...
I could not stop looking at the photos online, but I just knew it was out of my price range. I e-mailed the catering/wedding manager just for kicks to go in and see the place. I set up a time to go and see it... I was nervous... I needed back-up. No worries! This fell between that December 18th and January 9th timeline I was telling you about... Josh was here :)
I drug him with me. He said things like "this is nice" and "i like it, do you like it?" He was absoloutely no help at all... but by the time I left the place (I toured both the club room and the actual ball room) I LOVED this one space... but knew just knew my mother would feel otherwise and say things like "Carla, where is your great-grandmother going to sit?". But seriously, I'd found the perfect place... I mean just look at the description:
"You enter the inviting Magnolia Club, a space filled with cozy seating arrangements and modern décor, including the Texas-chic library, reflecting urban style with modern sleek leather seating arrangements. Cozy niches with sleek banquettes and ottomans provide plenty of space for guests to mingle and nosh on gourmet delicacies. Enjoy passed hors d’oeuvres or buffet stations with custom chef delicacies. The spacious, lounge-like setting is perfect for those seeking an energy-packed reception that is contemporary and more alternative than a traditional ballroom setting. The Magnolia Club is a one-of-a-kind event space that is big on style" (You can see photos at magnoliahoteldallas.com)
Needless to say-- I was going to have to do some Mommy convincing... so I did what any future bride would do... I turned to my maid of honor! I called my sister Jen... "Jenny! I found the perfect place for my wedding reception! There's no room rental fee, there are lots of amenities included, and they even give you a suite on your wedding night and throw in a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries" I explained it all to her... she was... well she sorta reminded me of my mom. She even threw in a comment that I was less than thrilled about "Chocolate covered strawberries? Is that what you're excited about??? Carla, I can make you some chocolate covered strawberries". Grrrr... this was not what I wanted to hear. She couldn't be my Mommy convincing back-up. I needed someone else, someone eccentric... and maybe even a little crazy... someone who knows what planning a wedding with MY mother is like. I turned to my matron of honor, my sister, Celeste. Eccentric? Check! Crazy? Double Check! Planned a wedding with MY mother? Yep!
I explained and showed pictures...she replied "I like it... and Mom will hate it... so just go put the deposit down and she can't say anything!" Whoa! Is that legal? Can you just go over your Mom's head about something like this... I didn't feel comfortable about that... maybe Celeste was a little TOO eccentric. So I decided to fight this beast myself-- the Magnolia was hosting a bridal fair and I wanted to take my Mom to see it all decked out reception style. Celeste came for moral support. Let's just say that everything I thought Mom would say... she said... but by the end of the night... and after tasting some awesome food there... she'd eerily changed her mind. I told her about all the cool things they could do with the space and she only had a few more questions left: "So can they at least put SOME round tables in here so your grandparents can sit down?"..."This is downtown... where will people park?"... "Exactly how much does this place cost?"... "Where do they put the dance floor?"... "Is that a pool table?!?!?!" (No we will not be playing pool at our reception- that sucker will be covered!)
So after the question and answer session... she said... "I like it, Carla. If this is what you and Josh really want then it sounds good to me!" I called Josh- ELATED! He surprisingly shared my sentiments- but then again I think he'd feel that way about any place I chose... hmmmm... guess we'll never know! I just think he's excited that he gets to marry (and party with) a girl like me in a place like that... oh and I think he's excited about the chocolate covered strawberries. I am!
We booked the Magnolia Hotel in downtown Dallas for the night of July 2, 2011!
